Area-level and geospatial analyses of patient experiences with healthcare: A SEER-CAHPS webinar

Date: Thursday, October 3, 2024
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm ET

Background

A growing body of research has investigated associations between patient experiences with healthcare and characteristics of the social and physical environments in which those patients live. The SEER-CAHPS data resource allows for research on patient reported care quality based on a linkage between the NCI's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) cancer registry data and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) Medicare Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) patient surveys. This webinar will provide a practical introduction to examining geographic and other area-level factors using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (SEER-CAHPS) linked data resource. Attendees will learn about the geographic identifiers and social-environment variables available in the linkage and about the possibilities and limitations of working with the area-level data. This webinar will also include discussion of methods for performing descriptive and inferential analyses, including: how to incorporate survey weights, case-mix adjustment variables, and survey responses into area-level estimates; methods for creating choropleth maps using data from the SEER-CAHPS data resource; and the use of spatial modeling to identify potential geographic patterns in the data. The webinar will close with a Q&A session.

Intended Audience

This webinar is intended for investigators at any level interested in learning more about the SEER-CAHPS data resource. No experience with SEER-CAHPS is required.

Participants are encouraged to submit questions about the SEER-CAHPS data resource to NCIHDRP@mail.nih.gov three days (3) in advance of the webinar. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions following the presentation.
